On Thursday, our basketball teams will be in action at 4 p.m. home against Collettesville.

End of grade testing for grades three through eight is just around the corner. We plan to offer breakfast each morning of testing. Any donation to assist would be appreciated and can be sent to Mrs. Dawn’s attention.

All middle school students should begin returning Chromebooks and chargers to school. We have to begin the process of getting Chromebooks ready for testing. Students will still have use of their Chromebooks at school; however, the Chromebooks will stay on the carts in homeroom classes to be charged overnight and will not be taken home. Students may begin returning them immediately. The final day to return Chromebooks and chargers is Friday, May 14.

Hello Warrior Families,

The office of charter schools is sponsoring the "Rock Star Teacher" contest.

The 2020-2021 school year has been like no other, and our incredible charter school community of teachers, staff, parents, students, and alumni have truly risen to the occasion, successfully demonstrating how strong we are together. The North Carolina Association for Public Charter Schools (NCAPCS) is providing an opportunity for you to recognize the significant contributions charter school teachers have made on your school community, student, and/or alumni.

One nominee will be selected from our school to be our "2020/21 Rock Star Teacher" nominee. The nomination can be in the form of a written impact statement (300-750 words) or video submission (1-10 minutes). One submission from our school will be chosen and entered in to the contest. Submissions will be reviewed by the NCAPCS Board and a $500 grant will be awarded to the nominee's charter school of choice.

You are welcome to nominate an NDS teacher for this award by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, please send submission to dburleson@ndschool.org.

Swing for STEM Golf Tournament

Dear Community Friends/Partners/Families of New Dimensions Students,

No one year has highlighted the importance of quality education more than the 2020-21 school year. Thanks to smaller class sizes, a large building, and strict COVID protocols, we were able to provide our students and staff with safe, in-person learning throughout the year. We also had several students join us virtually, and one common theme between our on- and off-campus learners was the importance of technology.

Our student advisory committees have asked for more ways to engage with technology, science, math, engineering, and the arts that are hands-on and not entirely screen-based. We are working with a local engineer, professional builders, and our team of teachers to create a fully-furnished, engaging STEM lab on our campus. We need your help to make that happen for our students.

We would like to extend the opportunity for you to help support our school and students. By sponsoring our Swing for STEM golf tournament on May 22 at Silver Creek Golf Club, your funds will go directly to supporting our school and are tax-deductible for your business. With your support, we can continue our academic excellence in the county, expand our extra-curricular programming, and support all students in their journey to be good citizens and community members.

You are also invited to get a team together and Swing for Stem.

Please share this information with your employers, family members, and friends.

Sincerely,

Dr. David Burleson, Director

Hello NDS Families,

Here is the update for the coming week. We still emphasis the importance of continuing to be vigilant in practicing the 3 Ws.

Open enrollment for New Dimensions began on Monday, January 4 and ends on March 31. Based on enrollment numbers and direction from the NCDPI there will be no virtual option for the 2021-2022 school year. Our enrollment lottery for open slots will held on April 1.

Monday, March 22 is a scheduled parent teacher workday at New Dimensions. There will be no in person or remote instruction. Teachers should have reached out to any family needing a conference to schedule one in Zoom. All students were provided their third quarter progress report on Friday to bring home for review.

Our next Applies with Admin will be held on Tuesday, March 23 at 4 p.m. in Zoom. If you would like to attend, just email Mrs. Grindstaff at dgrindstaff@ndschool.org for the Zoom link.

Wednesday, March 24 is Warrior Wednesday when students and staff are able to dress down in Warrior colors or attire. Students not participating will need to wear regular school uniforms.

With spring upon us and daylight savings time starting, I just wanted to remind our Warrior families about our school dress code. All students are to wear collared solid color shirts with solid, non-denim bottoms. All logos must be smaller than a fist.

On Tuesday March 23rd at 3:45 there will be an in-person meeting on the Athletic field regarding Cub Scouting at New Dimensions School. Youth are welcome at this meeting; however, this will be a parent/leader meeting. Cub Scouting had a large interest in 2019, the Cub Pack was off to a fantastic start! Let's keep this going and make a program that the youth of New Dimensions School are excited to be a part of and can learn and grow in! For more information contact Erich Carpenter, Piedmont Council, BSA District Executive, 704-472-7495, erich.carpenter@scouting.org.

Our middle school students have the opportunity for a field trip to Sugar Mountain on Thursday, March 25.

Hello Warrior Families:

Spring is just a few weeks away and with the beginning of spring comes many school related activities at New Dimensions, even though they are limited this year due to continued Covid restrictions. Spring also signals preparation for the end of a school year and laying a foundation for the next year.

As we plan to successfully end this school year and lay the foundation of a successful 2021-2022, a major point of emphasis will be on how to offset the post pandemic reading slide and seamlessly transition our students to the next grade level. To provide additional support for our current and incoming students, New Dimensions will offer a school wide Title 1 reading program, a comprehensive exceptional children’s program, a tutoring program with the Burke Augustine Literacy Project, a summer school program for those students needing a little extra time to be prepared for the next school year and an after-school program to provide additional help with homework, classwork and tests titled Fix It Til Four.

Fix it Til Four is a program designed to support students in grades 3-8 who need additional help with successfully completing homework, class work or tests. The following are components of the program:

  1. Operates from 3:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays.

  2. Program Location – Wilkerson Auditorium for grades 3 to 5 (Middle School students will meet in the middle school area.)

  3. The program begins on Monday, March 1. (Middle school has already started.)

  4. Subjects:

    1. Monday – ELA

    2. Tuesday – Math

    3. Wednesday – Science and Social Studies

    4. Thursday – Math

    5. Friday – Middle school only

  5. Staff – The program will be operated by teachers and teacher assistants.

  6. Parents and students will be notified at least one day in advance of staying for the program.

  7. Teachers will determine who is assigned to the program. Parents are encouraged to speak with their child’s teacher(s) concerning the need for additional support.

  8. Students staying for the program will be picked up in front of the school at 4 p.m.

I am proud of our school and the accomplishments of our students and staff during one of the most difficult years ever. My hope and prayer is to continue the positive progress we have made as we focus on the needs of each student.

Please let us know if we can assist you in any way.

David Burleson, NDS Director

Hello NDS Families,

As you now know, Mrs. Sally McIlwain is leaving our Warrior Family to move to Pennsylvania. We are all saddened by this news and will greatly miss her. She has done a wonderful job building Camp Warrior into a quality program.

Since we know that Mrs. Sally can’t be replaced, New Dimensions is partnering with the YMCA of Catawba County to provide before and after school care for our students. The YMCA program is structured very similar to what has been occurring in Camp Warrior each day. The fees are also comparable. You will find information from the YMCA describing their program and the new registration form on our website.

Transition from Camp Warrior to the YMCA Excel after the Bell program will begin on Monday, January 25. Updated registration forms will need to be completed and returned to the YMCA staff by Monday, February 1.

We are very excited about this new partnership with the YMCA and look forward to the expanded opportunities that will be offered to our students.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely yours,

David Burleson, Director

NDS Families,

Help us win $500!

Tomorrow, Tuesday December 1, is Giving Tuesday. Through Burke County United Way's 1BurkeGives campaign, we can win extra funds for our school. We're raising money to be able to establish a charitable lunch program for students who may need some extra assistance. Once established, our program will help support families with a little extra help by providing lunches through our lunch ordering program, at no cost to them.

How to Help: Tomorrow night, Tuesday, December 1st, between 8 - 10 pm, donate any amount and ask your friends and family to do the same. The nonprofit who has the most unique donations will win $500!!

Here's the direct fundraising link to share, plus additional information about the program, our school, and United Way's campaign: https://www.1burkegives.org/organizations/new-dimensions-a-public-charter-school

Let's show everyone how Warriors handle a challenge!

Thank you,

NDS Families,

We have been asked to forward this to our families from:

Mark Johnson, NC Superintendent of Public Instruction

Parents, Caretakers, and Educators –

Thanks to a program recently created by the NC General Assembly, most North Carolina families with school-age children are eligible for a $335 coronavirus relief payment to help with virtual schooling and childcare costs.

Most families should receive this relief automatically before the end of the year. Importantly, I want you to know that some families need to apply or need to amend their 2019 NC tax returns by October 15! Please see the information below from the NC Department of Revenue.

This $335 is meant to be some help for families dealing with the challenges of remote learning. Even during this crisis, our work continues to eliminate high-stakes testing, improve state standards, and promote all pathways to success for students. But please know that our top priority at your Department of Public Instruction is to support local education leaders as they work to help students, educators, and families get back into classrooms if they want to return to school.

My own child is learning remotely these days. I share in many of these struggles with you, and we will get through this together. I wish you and your families the best as we finish what has been a year filled with unimaginable challenges and continue to transform education in the future.

Sincerely,

Mark Johnson

NC Superintendent of Public Instruction

@MarkRJohnsonNC

Additional Information (please refer to www.ncdor.gov/extracredit for all information on qualifying)

The $335 payment is for individuals with at least one dependent child who was 16 or younger at the end of 2019. Individuals must have been residents of North Carolina for all of 2019.

The NC Department of Revenue has identified an issue with third-party tax preparation software that may require individuals to submit an amended return in order to receive the $335 payment.

From NC DOR:

Taxpayers that were allowed a federal child tax credit are advised to review their 2019 Form D-400 as filed and look at line 10a to determine if the return correctly reported a qualifying child. If the return incorrectly reported “0” children on line 10a, but the taxpayer would otherwise qualify for the grant, the taxpayer may file an amended return prior to the October 15, 2020 deadline.

Click this link for details: https://files.nc.gov/ncdor/documents/files/2020-9-21-Extra-Credit-Grant-Program.pdf

If you did not file a 2019 state return because your gross income for 2019 did not exceed the state’s filing requirements for your filing status (generally $10,000 per year if you are single and $20,000 per year if you are married), you may still be eligible for the $335 payment.

BUT you must apply or amend by October 15, 2020!

CLICK HERETO APPLY RIGHT NOW. DON’T DELAY!

Thank you,

Dawn M Grindstaff, NDS PR

NDS Warrior Families,

I wanted to make you aware that New Dimensions has had its first confirmed case of Covid 19. A New Dimensions staff member received positive test results this morning. We will continue to be vigilant to keep our students and staff safe.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me at dburleson@ndschool.org or call me at 828-437-5753.

Hello NDS Families,

Letters went home with those students that need vaccines for this school year. They have until 10/30/2020 to get the vaccines. If there are religious exemptions, documentation will need to be provided to Kristy Cooper, RN, or the student will not be able to return to school.

Here is an update for the coming week. I want to continue to encourage everyone to be vigilant in practicing the 3 W’s in order to keep ourselves and others safe.

On Monday, October 5 the NDS Apparel Order Window opens and is open through Friday, October 30th at 5:00 P.M. Mrs. Dawn sent out the link earlier.

On Tuesday, October 6th the Girls Softball Club will be meeting in the Middle School Auditorium at 3:45 p.m.

Wednesday, October 7 will be Warrior Wednesday where students and staff may dress down in Warrior gear or colors.

Thursday, October 8 will be a busy day at NDS. It will be ICEE Day and ASU will be doing a virtual Math Night for kindergarten through fifth grade in Zoom at 5 p.m. The Zoom link and details will be emailed to each family this week from your child’s math teacher

On Friday, October 9 we will have a dress down day to support breast cancer awareness. Bring a dollar to support cancer research and dress down.

By this time, we are beginning to attempt to settle in to remote learning. We all realize that there will continue to be ups and downs as our remote journey continues. The following groups should be in our remote instruction sessions:

  1. Students signed up for remote instruction

  2. Students who are quarantined

  3. Students with a long term illness

Students who have short term illnesses should spend time recovering and will do make up work as in the past. If there are extenuating circumstances please let me know.

If New Dimensions can assist you in any way, please send me an email at dburleson@ndschool.org.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
